Grandmothers
Grandmother’s Prayer for October 2nd
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, the losses at this age are real. Walter is gone. My best friend, Marlene, is gone. The pastor who married us is gone. My body does not work the way it used to. These things are true. But Your Word says hope is laid up for me in heaven. It is stored. It is kept. It does not depend on how I feel today. Lord Jesus, I do not have to make my own hope. I just need to remember that You are holding it for me. The woman in this chair can rest in that. Let this hope quiet me today. I can face my losses. They are real. But the hope is real, too. It is in a safer place than my heart. It is in Yours. Walk me through this day with both truths. The losses are real. And Your hope is realer. I do not have to choose. Both are true. Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
