Grandmother’s Prayer for October 1st

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, my pantry of fruit is full at this age. The new ones are small — this morning's quiet asking, the first thank-You over coffee, a kind word to someone in the store. The old ones are stacked deep — years of Bible study with the women at church, the prayers my husband and I prayed for our kids, the songs I sang to babies who now have babies of their own. All of them are for You. Lord, today let me bring out one old fruit and one new. The old one — let me remember and thank You by name for what You did through a prayer I prayed years ago when my son was struggling in school, and You sent someone to help him. The new one — let me make today a small bowl of new fruit by being patient with the slow moment and kind to the person in front of me. Old and new together. Both for You. The pantry has been worth keeping. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
