Grandmother's Prayer for September 22nd

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Psalm 149:2 says, “Let Israel rejoice in You.” Not in their circumstances. In You. Lord, the joy at my age is not the bright, loud joy of youth. It is a settled joy. It is what remains in the cup after the fizz has gone out. The fizz had its season. What is left has weight. Lord, my joy is in You. Not in my health, which is fine, but slower. Not in my finances, which are fine but tight. Not in my family, which is fine, but scattered. In You, who do not change. In You, who has been the same Father every morning for forty years of mornings. In You, who held me when Walter died and has held me since. This old verse tells me that the joy of believers across centuries has been the same joy I have at this kitchen table. They rejoiced in You. So do I. Today, let me rejoice quietly. Not perform a joy I do not feel. Not produce a brightness for the sake of the family. Just rest in the simple fact that You are who You are and that this old woman belongs to You. That is the joy. Tend it. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
