Grandmothers
Grandmother’s Prayer for September 20th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, in Judges 7, Gideon's tiny army shouted, "The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon." The Lord did the cutting. The men held the torches and blew the trumpets. That arrangement still works. My army is small. Most days it is just me, alone with a phone and a Bible and a pen. The sword is Yours. The torch and trumpet are mine. The battle for my grandson's mind is not mine to fight directly. The battle for my granddaughter's marriage is not mine to fight directly. They are Yours, and the sword is Yours. My job is to keep the torch lit, to keep praying, to keep present, to keep faithful in my small spot. Today let me lift the small torch and blow the small trumpet for whatever battle is in front of me. Let me stand at my station, with You doing the actual cutting. The arrangement still works. Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
