Grandmother’s Prayer for September 19th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, You made me free. Galatians 5:1 says to stand fast in that freedom. The freedom was Your gift. The standing is me trusting what You already did.

Lord, the yokes I pick back up are not the old ones. I am not going back to the law. But I do pick up quieter yokes. The yoke of having to be the strong one when I am tired. The yoke of being the family historian, whether I want to or not. The yoke of feeling guilty when I do not return a call quickly enough. The yoke of measuring myself against the busy women at church.

Jesus, You lifted every one of those yokes. I am the one who keeps reaching for them again. Stand me fast today. The cross was enough. I do not have to earn my place in the family by always doing. I do not have to earn my place at church by being at every meeting. I do not have to earn Your love by performing.

The work was done. The yoke was lifted. Keep my hands off the old yokes today. Walk me upright, in the liberty, with both hands free.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
