Grandmothers
Grandmother’s Prayer for September 18th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, if I live in the Spirit, help me walk in the Spirit. That is the hard part at my age. Believing is easy. The walking is the actual day — the kept patience, the small kindness, the refusal to gossip, the long-game prayer for the family. Lord, my walking is slower now. I take small steps. The morning walk to the mailbox is not far, but it is what I have. The afternoon walk through this apartment to make the bed is what I have. Each step is a chance to be walking in the Spirit, not just believing in the Spirit. Help me keep the walking small and steady. The long walk through the long valley is over. The small daily walks are what remain. Make those walks Yours. The pace is slower. The Spirit is not less. Walk me through Wednesday. Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
