Grandmothers
Grandmother’s Prayer for September 7th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, in Mark 2, four friends tore open a roof to bring one man to Jesus. They would not let the crowd stop them. I have a few people I have been trying to reach for a long time. The grandchild who walked away from church. The neighbor who will not speak Your name. The family member in a hard place I cannot fix. The friends in the story did not stop at the door. They went through the roof. Lord Jesus, my way through the roof is prayer. I do not have a roof to open. I have the slow, plain work of carrying each name to You day after day. Some weeks, the carrying feels useless. But You promise otherwise. The friends did get the man to Jesus. The healing did happen. Make me faithful to keep bringing my people to You. Help me believe the crowd is not the last word. There is always another way to get someone to You. Show me the way for each of mine. Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
Verses to pray
Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.
When they could not come near to him for the crowd, they removed the roof where he was. When they had broken it up, they let down the mat that the paralytic was lying on.
Mark 2:4
