Grandmother’s Prayer for September 4th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Lord Jesus, I have prayed many prayers. Sometimes I heard Your yes right away. Sometimes it took years before I could look back and see You had been cleaning all along. Both are real. I have been bringing my family to You for decades. The addiction that runs in my son's family. The depression that visits my granddaughter. The pride that has marked my middle child since he was a boy. I am still bringing them. Some weeks, I grow weary of the bringing. But the cleaning is Your work. The asking is mine. I will keep asking. Today, let me ask without trying to manage your timing. Without counting how many years I have been at it. The leper in Mark 1:41 did not say, This has taken too long. He knelt and asked. Let me kneel too — in my chair, with my creaky knees — and ask again for the people I love. You will in Your time. I trust You with the when and the how. Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
Verses to pray
