Grandmother’s Prayer for September 3rd

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Your Word says, Thou whom my soul loveth. That is who You are to me. After all these years, I do not have to argue for this love. I just know it. I have loved You longer than I can remember not loving You. I found You when I was young, and I have not stopped. Lord Jesus, love is not the fresh feeling of a girl anymore. It is more like the steady knowing of someone who has lived in the same house for fifty years and knows the sound of every floorboard. I love You. I do not have to perform it. It is a quiet climate throughout the day. Today let that love come out in small things — in the meal I share with a friend, in the patience I show the cashier, in the prayer I lift for my granddaughter. I still love You. That has not changed and is not going to. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
