Grandmothers
Grandmother’s Prayer for August 28th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, in Your house long ago, someone had to bring oil every day so the lamps would not go out. The light did not stay lit on its own. Lord, the same is true in my small apartment. The light I have in my faith this morning is not from a tank I filled long ago. It is from oil I bring again today. The verse I read. The short prayer. The hymn I hum while the coffee brews. The quiet sorry before my feet hit the floor. These are the oil. Lord, the oil is not fancy. It is simple, like cooking oil. It is enough for one day's lamp. You ask for it daily, not in big barrels. The daily is the right size. Keep me a steady oil-bringer. Help me not to skip the morning when I am tired, because the tired morning is when the lamp needs its drop the most. Help me not to skip the evening when I feel dull. Make the oil-bringing one of the steady habits of the years I have left. The lamp lights this small life. Without the oil, the dark in here would be worse. Thank You that You are the one who keeps the light burning, even when my jar is small. Bring me to the table again tomorrow with the small jar. Amen.
