Grandmothers
Grandmothers Prayer for August 25th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, Your Word says His fruit was sweet to my taste. Not an idea. Not a look. Real sweetness on the tongue. The early years of my faith were full of fresh tastes. The first time I understood Jesus died for me, in a Bible study in a church basement. The first time my own prayer became more than words I had memorized. The first time a psalm spoke to a worry I had not even said out loud. The fruit was sweet to my taste then. It is still sweet now. The sweetness has changed. It is less startling and more settled. It is like the taste of bread someone has baked for You the same way for years. You still made it. It still feeds You. Christ, keep the taste alive in me even when the surprise is gone. The Bible is still sweet to my taste. The hymns I sang as a young woman are still sweet to my taste. The communion bread on Sunday is still sweet to my taste. Help me slow down today and taste the small, good things You have been handing me for decades. The same fruit. Still sweet. Still Yours. Amen.
