Grandmother’s Prayer for August 23rd

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, You promised in Isaiah 65:19 that one day the sound of weeping will be heard no more. I am holding onto that promise today. I have done a lot of weeping in my years. Some of it I cannot even remember the cause of anymore — the small disappointments, the quiet hurts. Some of it I will never forget — the baby we lost, the father who died too young, the funeral last year. The tears have been part of this long life. But You say the tears will end. Not the love. Not the meaning of what I wept over. The tears themselves. Lord Jesus, that is a strange and good promise. I cannot quite picture a life with no need for tears. I have been in this body too long, with this much grief tucked into the corners. But You ask me to trust You anyway. Help me rest the older weeping into Your hands. Help me trust You with what comes still ahead. Help me set down tears that have already been answered, even when I cannot see how. Take the older tears, Lord. Keep my heart soft for whatever time is left. Bring the day You promised. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
