Grandmothers Prayer for August 22nd

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Lord Jesus, I have had stretches where I felt You distant. Not because You moved. Because something — fatigue, distraction, my own dullness — got in the way. I do not want to pretend the absence is fine. I miss You. This longing for You has been a thread throughout my long life of believing. It comes, and it goes. Some seasons, I am content. In other seasons, I want more of You than I am getting, and I do not know exactly how to ask. I do not want a polite prayer that pretends all is fine. I want a real one that names the longing. I miss the closeness of certain past mornings with You. I want more than just getting by in my walk with You. Make me hungry for You again. Then meet me. You always have. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
