Grandmothers
Grandmother’s Prayer for August 15th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, this evening I will not go to a field. I will sit on the porch, or by this window with the lamp on. Help me step away from the noise of the day. Let the day settle. Let my mind walk a little with You. As I slow down, I bring back what mattered today. The conversation with my niece on the phone, when I almost cut her off. The kindness at the post office when the young man held the door. The verse I read this morning that I had not yet returned to all day. Lord, I do not need something big to meet You. I only need to be still and know You are here. Make this quiet evening time something my whole evening can rest on. Isaac once went out to think and pray at dusk, and You met him there. You meet me wherever I am willing to slow down and notice. Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
