Grandmother’s Prayer for August 12th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, the news this morning on the radio was bad. The world feels unsteady. The granddaughter sent a text last night that worried me. The lab results from Tuesday are still not back. But You reign. That is the big fact. It does not change because I am anxious. It does not change because the news is bad. You reign. And that means my granddaughter's anxious week is held by a hand that is steadier than my hand. That means my lab results are known by the One whose reign does not depend on the outcome. Lord, this is not denial. It is a putting in order. The big fact comes first. The small ones come after. Today, let me put them in that order. Set me in the morning with the right news at the top. Make my private worry small under Your wide reign. Let the earth rejoice, and let one small grandmother in a quiet kitchen rejoice with it. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
