Grandmother’s Prayer for August 11th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, I miss the older days. I miss the younger marriage. I miss the noisy house. I miss the body that did what I told it to do. Job felt that ache, and I feel it too. You do not scold me for the longing. You see that my losses are real. You see that I am being honest. Help me not to pretend the past was perfect. It had its own troubles, which I have edited out. Help me not to pretend the present is easy. But help me see that You still preserve me. Your care has not stopped. It has grown quieter. It is less obvious to anyone watching. But it is no less real to the one being kept. Let me grieve what was. Let me receive what is. Keep me honest in the longing. Keep me grateful for the faithfulness that has not gone away. Amen.
