Grandmother’s Prayer for August 7th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, the older I get, the simpler love becomes. There were seasons when love felt like a test. I thought I had to perform. I thought I owed You something at every stage of my children's lives. That weight has fallen away. What is left is more like a quiet held hand. Lord Jesus, You know I love You. I have not had to make a speech about it for a long time. The love comes out in the showing up. At the open Bible. At the prayer for my children. At the kindness towards the cashier. At the patience with the slow neighbor. Keep me loving in a simple way. Do not let me complicate it as my body gets weaker. Keep me upright, standing and not falling, for as long as You give me to stand. Then carry me when the standing is over. Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
