Grandmother’s Prayer for August 6th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Lord, I have done my share of the watchman's work. The nights when I was up with sick children. The nights I waited for our prodigal to come home. The nights after the funeral. Even now, at this age, there are nights when sleep does not come, and the body and the mind both ask: what of the night? You do not promise the night is over yet. You tell the truth. Morning comes, and also the night. Both will keep coming. Father, give me the watchman's patience. Help me stay at my post through both. The wakeful hours of an old woman are not wasted if I keep them with You. The grandson on the prayer list at three a.m. The hurting friend lifted up at four. The simple confession at five before the coffee is on. Make my nights useful for someone. Make my mornings, when they come, grateful instead of merely relieved. Hold me steady on the wall for whatever watch is left. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
