Grandmother’s Prayer for August 5th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Your Word says that all things work together for good to those who love You. I am old enough now to know that the word all covers a great many hard things. There have been losses that broke my heart. There have been years that felt like they would never end. There have been nights I did not think I would make it through. None of those moments felt good when I was in them. But You were not absent. You were working, even when I could not see it. Looking back from this chair, I can see that the work has been real. The pain drew me closer to You. The loss taught me to hold what I love with an open hand. The long silence taught me to listen. I do not know what is ahead for my family or for the years I have left. I do not need to see it in advance. The pattern has held my whole life. Help me trust the pattern. Help me trust the One who works it. Walk with me into today, and give me the long view. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
