Grandmothers Prayer for August 2nd

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, You work all things by Your own wise plan. Ephesians 1:11 says so, and I have lived long enough to see it.

When I was young, that verse made me nervous. I wanted my own plan to win. Now it comforts me in a way I never expected.

I have seen Your plan work. Not always the way I would have chosen. But always in a way that brought more good than mine would have.

The job Walter did not get in 1974, which we mourned for a month, kept us out of a town that flooded out the next decade. The girl my son did not marry, who broke his heart in the fall of 1995, was not going to be a good wife. The diagnosis we feared in 2008 turned out to be benign on the second test.

You are not asking me to like Your plan before I see it. You are asking me to trust the One who made it.

Today, the things on my list are smaller. But the principle is the same. Your plan is good, even though the move is not what I would have asked for.

Hold me to Your plan. Quiet my heart and keep me steady.

Amen.
