Grandmothers
Grandmother’s Prayer for July 27th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, Your promises are great and precious. I have leaned on them for fifty-five years. Everyone I have truly leaned on has held.
The leaning began in a tiny apartment when I prayed You would give Walter a job, and You did. Then came the bigger leaning at the funeral of our first baby. Again, when our second son went off the rails for ten years. Again, when the cancer was found, it was small. Each lean tested a promise. Each promise held.
Lord Jesus, as the body gets less sure, it is easy to start doubting what is under me. But the body is failing, and the promises are not. The eyes are dimmer, but the promises are bright. The memory is patchy but Your promise to be with me to the end of the age is whole.
I have never leaned my full weight on one of Your promises and felt it give. There is no reason to think it will start giving now.
Hold me up on the same promises today—the simple ones. You are with me always. You will never leave me nor forsake me. You who began a good work in me will complete it. Hold me up on those. They are still bearing weight.
Amen.

- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
