Grandmother’s Prayer for July 20th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Lord Jesus, Your Word says the Holy Spirit is the down payment on what You have promised us — the guarantee that the rest is coming. I learned what a down payment was when someone I loved and I bought our first house. We put down what we had, and we trusted the rest would come. You have put Your Spirit inside this life — a life that is small in some ways, but Yours. The Spirit has comforted me. Corrected me. Taught me. Sometimes withheld something I wanted, and I see now it was mercy. That presence in this chair, this morning, this quiet room, is the proof that Your promise is good. The contract was signed at the cross. You are holding the rest in Your hands. I do not have to carry what is Yours to carry. Help me to live today trusting the down payment You have already given. Make me faithful in this ordinary day. Amen.

  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
