Grandmothers
Grandmothers Prayer for July 17th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, some mornings I am sure You chose me. Other mornings, especially after I have been short with my daughter, I have my doubts. But my assurance is not built on my mood. The choosing is Yours, not mine. The believing is mine, but the election is Yours. That truth has steadied me when very little else did — the long sadness after my mother died, the year I could not bring myself to pray after the miscarriage of our daughter's first baby. I did not feel chosen in those years. I knew I was. That knowing is not a high feeling. It is more like a low chair I sit down in when my legs are tired. Lord, today I sit in that chair again. I am tired. My body is tired. My old questions are tired. The chair holds. Make my obedience for today small and steady. Let my certainty rest where it has always rested — in You, the One who chose me, not in my own weak feelings. Walk me through this morning by Your steadiness. Amen.
