Grandmother’s Prayer for July 16th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, the Israelites gathered manna every morning, each one as much as he could eat. They could not save it up. The next day's portion had to be gathered the next day. After all these decades, I still want to store ahead. I want enough faith in me to last the week. I want my faith for next Tuesday gathered already today. But You have never let that work. The portion in the jar by Friday has always been stale. The fresh portion has had to be picked up in the morning, on knees that creak now, in a kitchen that is quieter than it used to be. That keeps me humble. After sixty years of this, You still ask me to gather. I am not above the manna basket just because I have been at it a long time. Lord, send the morning's portion. I do not need next month's. I do not need next week's. I need the one for today — for the conversation with the doctor at three, for the call I am dreading from my sister, for the hour after dinner when the house is too quiet, and the old grief rises. Enough for the next twenty-four. That is the only basket You fill. Amen.

  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
