Grandmothers
Grandmother’s Prayer for July 15th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, in Your Word, You told the priests to keep the fire burning on the altar and never let it go out. They had to tend it every day, even when nothing big was happening. Especially then.
My faith is not loud anymore. It is more like a coal I keep blowing on each morning in this chair. Some days the flame is very small. Some mornings, prayer is just an open page and the truth that I did not sleep well.
But the fire has not gone out. Keep me tending it. Keep me opening the Bible even when nothing rises off the page. Keep me on my knees, slower than I used to be, even when there is no big reason to kneel.
Keep me praying for my grandchildren. For the one with the new baby. For the one with the new job. For the one who is angry at You right now.
The fire is Yours. The keeping is mine to do, with Your help. Let me be a faithful keeper of small flames today.
Amen.
