Grandmother’s Prayer for July 13th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Lord, You asked Jonah, “Do You do well to be angry?” That is the question I have been avoiding.

Jonah was angry over a withered plant after Nineveh turned back to You. He was furious that Your mercy was bigger than he wanted it to be. I understand that more than I want to admit.

I have my own withered-plant angers. A neighbor's slight from ten years ago that I still tell like it happened yesterday. A daughter-in-law who never thanked me for the quilts I made. A church split that took my best friend with it. I have held on to these quietly for years. I have kept them close. I have let them grow back every time the right name comes up.

Father, old anger does not turn into wisdom just because it has been around a long time. It turns into a habit. And I am tired of this habit.

Help me bring these small angers out into the light today like someone bringing out the silver to polish. Let me look at each one. Let me hand it over to You. Let me say plainly, no, I do not do well to be angry about this anymore. Then help me put it down and walk to the next room.

Make my old age light, Lord. Not heavy with things I have held on to too long.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
