Grandmothers
Grandmother’s Prayer for July 10th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Lord Jesus, Your Word says I am a fellow citizen with the saints. I sat with that this morning and felt it tug. So many of the people I loved are already with You. My mother. My pastor. My closest friends. My husband. What used to feel like a church idea now feels like a real city where many of my people already live. The loneliness of outliving my friends is a heavy weight. There are days the phone does not ring because there is no one left to call about ordinary things. But You remind me that Your church is not just the small group who can drive to coffee on Tuesday. It is also a great company that has gone ahead. They are not gone from the city. I am still in the same city. The walls are wider than I see from my chair. Help me feel that wideness today. Let me write to the young pastor's wife in our church who needs to know someone is praying for her. Let me carry this hope like something settled and sure, and not just as sorrow. Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
