Grandmother’s Prayer for July 9th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Your Word says to bless You and not forget Your benefits. I want to do that, but my mind does not hold on the way it used to. I forget the names on my prayer list. I forget what I came into the room for. I am not going to remember Your good gifts by accident. I have to sit here and do it on purpose. So this morning I am trying. The coffee is still warm in my cup. The cat is curled on my feet. The check came when I needed it. My daughter called twice this week. Walter slept through the night without the hip pain. The hymn on Sunday brought back my mother's voice. The pear tree in the yard is bearing fruit again. The grandchildren are at least not in trouble, as far as I know. Each one is a gift from You, and I forget them within an hour. I am not doing it on purpose. It is just how a tired mind works. Help me build remembering into my day, the way I line up the pill bottles on the counter so I cannot miss them. Let me write one line in my journal before bed. Let me speak a thank-You into the empty room. Let me say grace before the bread on the table. Keep me blessing what You have already blessed me with. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
