Grandmothers
Grandmothers Prayer for July 6th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, Your word says that whoever listens to wisdom will dwell safely, quiet from the fear of evil. I want both halves of that. Quiet from fear is a precious thing. I have done a lot of unnecessary fearing over the years. The news comes on the radio at six, and the fear arrives before I have had coffee. The grandchildren's worried texts come in, and fear settles into my chest. The pharmacist's voice on the phone changes tone. and fear sits down beside me for an hour. Your promise is not that I will never hear what is hard. Your promise is a settled place for the one who listens — really listens — to You. Help me listen this morning. To Your word over the radio's word. To Your still quiet voice over the urgent one. To what has always been true over what is loud today. Make my dwelling place quiet again. Make my hours and my heart a place that fear cannot move into. I will turn the radio off after the weather. I will read a psalm before checking the messages. I will pray for the grandchildren by name instead of worrying about them in my head. Amen.
