Grandmother’s Prayer for July 2nd

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Lord, today is a heavy morning. I do not know why. It just is. I read Psalm 33:21 slowly. It says my heart can rejoice in You because I have trusted in Your holy name. It does not say my heart will rejoice in my circumstances. There is a big difference. Lord, the joy You have given me in this long life has not always matched what was happening around me. Some of my best joys came in hard years. Some of my hardest times came when everything looked fine on the outside. Trust came first, slowly, like a vine that takes hold over many years. Joy followed. I do not feel the joy right now, sitting here this morning. But I trust Your holy name. I trust who You have been to me all these years. Help me hold on to that trust today. And let Your joy come when You are ready. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
