Grandmother’s Prayer for June 29th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him. - 1 Thessalonians 4:14.

Father, this verse is Your comfort to Your people. Those who have died in Christ are not lost. They sleep. You will bring them with Him.

I have my own list of those who sleep in Jesus. My husband. My mother. The pastor who married us. The friends who went before me one by one. They are not lost. The verse is firm. They sleep. You will bring them.

This is what happens when Your Son appears. The dead in Christ will rise. The living will be caught up to meet Him. I will see them again. Not because we deserve it. Because You held them, and You hold me, and we are all Yours.

Let me hold this verse gently this morning. The grief is not gone. But it is not the last word. Grief and hope walk together. And the hope is stronger than the grief, by a margin I cannot measure.

Let me carry the names of the ones who sleep into this day with quiet confidence.

Amen.

How to pray it

  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
