Grandmother’s Prayer for June 14th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear them. - John 8:6.

Father, in that moment, the Lord did not answer the trap question right away. He stooped. He wrote in the dust. He let the silence work on the accusers and the accused. The silence was its own teaching.

Jesus was not rattled by the demand for a quick answer. He did not perform. He took His time and let the situation show itself.

I am not Jesus, but I can borrow some of that calm in my smaller settings. The phone call today requires a sharp reply. The news story that wants a hot opinion. The hurtful word from family that wants me to clap back right away.

Let me stoop and write in the dust, in whatever small way an old woman can. Let me let the silence do some of the work. You spoke the right word after a pause, when the time was right. The right word will come for me, too, on a smaller scale, if I let quiet be my first response and not panic.

Amen.

  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
