Grandmother’s Prayer for June 11th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, You once asked Moses, "Has My hand grown short?" That question is still the answer today. Your hand has not grown short. It is the same hand that fed Your people in the wild. It is the same hand that has held me for all my years.

I have had my own moments of doubt. Your hand seemed shorter the day the diagnosis came. Your hand seemed shorter the week the grandchild stopped calling. Your hand seemed shorter the month the bank account looked thinner than I remembered. But each time, Your hand was the same. My eyes were the thing that had shrunk for a season.

Let the question land again this morning, Father. Has Your hand grown short? No. Not for me. Not for the people I love. Not for this country, no matter what the news says. Your hand has the same reach today that it had at the Red Sea.

Let me trust that I reach for the small matters of this day.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
