Grandmothers
Grandmother’s Prayer for June 1st
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, Moses wrote down the journeys of Your people at Your command where they started. Where they went. Where they camped. Where the cloud led. You kept the record through his hand.
I have not written my own journeys down in any organized way. But the dates in the margins of my Bible tell some of the story. Some stops I remember clearly. Some are only impressions. Some names have faded. But the starting places and the camping places are real.
Let me sit with my own list this evening. Egypt to the Red Sea. The Red Sea to Sinai. Sinai to the long wilderness. The wilderness to Jordan. The Jordan to this present resting place. Each move was at Your direction. Each move has been kept in Your memory, even when mine has gone soft on the details.
Let the journey be what it has been: Yours. The next stop will be Your call too. Until then, the recording is being done by hands steadier than mine. Let me rest in the keeping of the record by the One who keeps everything.
Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
