Grandmother’s Prayer for May 31st

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us - John 1:14.

Father, this verse is at the heart of the good news, and it never stops being strange and wonderful. The Word was with You in the beginning. The Word was You. And then He became flesh. He lived among ordinary people in an ordinary land.

He really dwelt among us. In tents. In dust. In kitchens. In carpentry shops. It was real life. And He still dwells among us now, in a new way, by His Spirit, in the lives of His people.

He dwells in me. He is with me as I sit in this chair, because I belong to Him. He is in the conversations of His people all over the world. When God came near in Jesus, He started a pattern that did not end when Jesus went back to heaven. It just changed form.

Let me notice Your dwelling today. The Word who became flesh is the Word who is here, by the Spirit You sent, in this room. This verse has finished May for me. The last day of the month is Yours. And June will be Yours, too.

Your dwelling has not paused. The Word goes with me into June, into the kitchen, into the people I will love. Let me be grateful all the way through.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. The Word became flesh and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the only born1:14 The phrase “only born” is from the Greek word “μονογενους”, which is sometimes translated “only begotten” or “one and only”. Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.
