Grandmother’s Prayer for May 30th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, take the foxes. The little foxes that spoil the vines. Song of Solomon 2:15.

They do not look like big threats. But they eat the tender shoots. The vine does not flourish where they have been.

I have my own little foxes at this age. Most of them are not the big dramatic ones. They are the small ones. The little impatience with a cashier. The little jealousy when a friend's daughter visits more often than my daughter does. The little sourness in my tone when the news disappoints me.

None of these is large. But all of them spoil the tender places in my soul.

Catch them, Father. Send Your Spirit into the vineyard to chase them off. The vine is Yours. The new growth You have been working in me is real. Let it flourish.

The foxes are real. The catching is also real. Let it go on today. And let my soul be a quiet and productive place by evening.

Amen.

  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
