Grandmothers
Grandmother’s Prayer for May 27th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, Your word and Your oath cannot be broken. It is impossible for You to lie. They give strong consolation to everyone who has fled to the hope set before them.
I fled long ago. I keep fleeing. Every day I run back to the same refuge. I do not look for a new one. The hope set before me is fixed. The consolation is fixed.
Let me lay hold again this morning. Not weakly. Firmly. This is a grip, not a touch. Hope is something to be held. Let me hold it with both hands today, because the day will want me to set it down for smaller things.
I will not set it down. I will hold it through breakfast. I will hold it through the errands. I will hold it through the conversation at three.
The consolation is strong because the Promiser is strong. The hope is set before me because it has been provided in Christ. The fleeing is the daily renewal of where I live. Let me live there again today.
Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
Verses to pray
Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.
