Grandmother’s Prayer for May 19th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Your own words say that when we see Your Son, we see You. That is what John 14:9 means, and it is the answer Philip needed. It is the answer I need too. I do not need a special vision. I need to see Jesus plainly in the Gospels. The apostles were kind to write down what He was like. Jesus did not send Philip to a hard mystery. He pointed to Himself. That same direction works for me. This morning, as I open the chapter I am about to read, let me look at Him. Let me see You in Him. The mystery is still deep, but the way in is real. Every time I read Your Word with attention, I see You again. Help me give You my attention today. Let seeing Your Son make me steadier. I am a slow disciple, Lord. But I am seen by the One I am learning to see. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
