Grandmother’s Prayer for May 17th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, the Spirit of God moved over the face of the waters at the very start of the Bible. The world was without form and void and dark, and Your Spirit hovered. That hovering was the beginning of all ordering. The same Spirit who hovered over the deep is the Spirit You sent into the church and into my own heart. He still hovers. He still orders. He still brings light out of darkness when You speak the word. There are small unformed places in my life this morning. The conversation I do not know how to have. The decision is not yet clear. The relationship that is in slow motion and not yet stable. Your Spirit hovers over each of them. He will do His ordering work in His own time. I do not have to make the light come. Let me trust the hovering. Let me not panic in the unformed parts. The same Spirit who made the world is at work in the small unmade parts of my Tuesday. Your Word is older than my trouble. Your Spirit is older than Your Word. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
