Grandmother’s Prayer for May 7th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, You told Abram to walk before You and be whole. He was ninety-nine. He had been waiting a long time for Your promise. That command did not crush him. It set the direction for the rest of his life.

I have been waiting too. Maybe not as long as Abram. Maybe longer. Either way, the direction still applies.

Walk before You. Not behind, hiding. Before You, where You can see me, and where I can remember that I am seen.

Be whole. Not flawless. Whole. The same person in my heart as I am on the outside. Not in pieces. Not pretending. Whole.

Let me walk that way today. The walk does not have to be far. The walk to the mailbox. The walk to the door when someone rings the bell. The walk from the chair to the bed at night. Each one in Your sight. Each one as a whole woman, not in fragments.

Abram became Abraham. The walking did its work. Let it do its work in me, too.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
