Grandmother’s Prayer for April 13th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Lord, You know the words we say when we are hurting. You know the if-onlys. Mary said, “If You had been here, my brother would not have died.” She was not wrong to say it. She was just broken. And You did not scold her. You wept with her first. Father, I have had my own hard mornings. I have sat with my own if-onlys. Grief has a way of talking before faith catches up. But You were there. You were with me even when I could not feel You. You had Your own purposes. You still do. The resurrection came after the weeping. Help me believe that. Let my grief be real. Let my hope be realer. You are in this kitchen. You are in this quiet morning. I am still learning to be a witness to You, right here in the ordinary. The grief is real. The resurrection is real. And You are here. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
