Grandmother’s Prayer for April 7th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, David asked, How long will You love what is worthless and chase after lies? That question was for others, but it lands on me too. I have let the news fill my afternoons. I have chosen easy comfort over the harder truth of Your word. I have made small glories feel small, the very gifts You gave me. These are not the big sins of my youth. They are the quiet choices of someone who knows better and still gets it wrong. Let me hear David's question as if You are asking me. How long, Lord? The empty things have worn out their welcome. Your glory has been waiting under them all along. Turn me back to it this morning. Not with some big vision. Just with the small willingness to put down the thing that numbs me and pick up the thing that feeds me. The right book is the one I have known since I was a girl. Your glory has not moved. Let me knock again on that familiar door. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
