Grandmothers
Grandmother’s Prayer for April 4th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. - Hebrews 13:5.
Father, this is the verse I taught my children to memorize. They taught their children. The grandchildren who came through this house at Christmas can say it.
The verse outlasts the people who learn it. The promise is older than my family. In time my family will give way to other families. The promise will outlast them too.
You have kept this promise with me in quiet ways, through all the ordinary days of my life. There have been hours I felt forsaken. There have been no hours when I truly was.
You do not leave. You said You would not. Never. Never.
The kettle is whistling. The cardinal is at the feeder. I am not alone. I have not been alone. I will not be alone.
This promise is the floor beneath me. Let me carry it into the rest of this day. Let me carry it into the phone calls I will make. Let me carry it into the prayers I will pray for the few people who are mine to pray for.
Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
