Grandmother’s Prayer for March 31st

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, the Lord is my portion, says my soul; therefore I will hope in Him. Lamentations 3:24.

Father, Jeremiah said, that after he lost nearly everything. The portion left was You. And that was enough.

At my age, the portion has cleared the same way. My husband is gone. Some friends are gone. Many of the things I used to count on are not what they used to be. But what is left, what cannot be made less, is You. That is the portion the years could not touch.

The cupboard in the back of the kitchen has fewer things in it than it once did. But the cup You poured into my hand has not been emptied.

I will hope in You for what comes next, because You have been the steady portion through everything that has already come.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
