Grandmother’s Prayer for March 22nd

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, he went a little farther, and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as Thou wilt.” - Matthew 26:39.

Father, Your Son showed me how to pray when the cup is too heavy.

He went a little farther from the others. He asked You honestly. He named the cup He did not want. Then He said, not my will, but Yours.

I still have cups I do not want.I do not need to pretend.

There is the cup of the lonely afternoon. There is the cup of the relationship that did not heal in time. There is the cup of this body that does fewer things than it used to.

I bring each cup to You now.I ask honestly. If it be possible.

And then I add what Your Son added. Not as I will, but as You will.

You did not take the cup from Him.But You were with Him through it.And You brought life out of what seemed like the end.

I am asking You for that same faithfulness in the smaller cups of this season.Be with me in them.Carry me through them.Hold my will close to Yours.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
