Grandmother’s Prayer for March 14th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Your Word warns that anyone who thinks he stands should be careful not to fall. That warning is plain, and I am old enough not to soften it.

I have lived long enough to watch good people of every kind stumble in their later years over things they would have laughed at when they were young. Staying close to You is not something I graduate from. It takes the same humble heart now as it did then.

So let me take heed this morning. Not in fear. Just with clear eyes.

The places where I am proud at this stage are mostly small ones. Pride that I have lived faithfully so far. Pride that my faith has stayed steady while others drifted. Pride in a long marriage, long church membership, long years in the Bible. None of those things protect me by themselves. They are gifts. But when I treat them as my own accomplishments, they become traps.

Keep me low. Keep me dependent on You. The day I stop expecting to need You is the day I am most likely to fall. I have not stopped expecting. I will not stop today.

My standing belongs to You. I am only standing because You hold me up.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
