Grandmother’s Prayer for February 22nd

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Your Son said, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Matthew 16:24. The terms are still the same. Deny yourself. Take up the cross. Follow. I have lived long enough now to see that the self-denial of this age is mostly giving up small comforts that once felt like rights. The cross I am picking up today is not heavy. It is the size of a teacup. It is the choice not to complain to the granddaughter about her busyness. It is the willingness to do the dishes after lunch and not leave them for the visiting daughter to find. It is the patient waiting at the doctor's office without making the receptionist feel my impatience. None of these is large. None of them is exempt either. Let me take them up cheerfully. And let me follow today, with whatever small cross is mine for this Friday, and let the following be the actual point. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
