Grandmother’s Prayer for February 18th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Your Word says I was once darkness, but now I am light in the Lord. You tell me to walk as a child of light. That verse is honest. It does not call the darkness a phase or a mood. It names it for what it was. And the light is not something I achieved. You gave it. I have walked in both. The darkness lasted longer than anyone around me wanted to admit. Some of those dark years happened right inside the church doors. When the light came, it was not loud or showy. It was a slow learning to live as the person You had already made me. Let me walk today as a child of light, with the plain meaning of those words. Honesty in small things. Kindness in what I say. Turning away from the old habits that grew best in the dark, the sharp words, the worry, the grudges I hold when no one is looking. None of that is dramatic. It is just the natural way of someone who knows where she lives now. Keep me walking in the light. And do not let the old darkness, even in its quiet leftover forms, put on a good face and take back ground it has lost. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
