Grandmother’s Prayer for February 17th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, thy servants take pleasure in her stones, and favour the dust thereof. - Psalm 102:14.

Father, Your servants loved Zion even when it was in ruins. They did not wait for it to be fixed before they cared for it.

I love some things that are mostly broken now. The neighborhood where I raised my children. The little church that closed. The way a dear friend used to talk before the memory started to fade. My own body, which once did so much more.

Some of these things will not be rebuilt in my lifetime. The dust is still dust. But You do not ask me to love them less because the stones have shifted.

Help me love what is changed without pretending it is still strong. Help me be honest about what is fading. And let the rebuilding I cannot do happen in Your time, by Your power, so that even the dust I cannot lift becomes part of what You are making new.

Amen.
