Grandmother’s Prayer for January 29th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Your Word says we look not at what is seen, but at what cannot be seen, because what can be seen lasts only for a while, but what cannot be seen lasts forever. - 2 Corinthians 4:18.

Father, the list of things I can see is getting shorter. Some of the people who used to fill this house are no longer here. Some of the strength I once had in my own hands is gone. It is easy to grieve only for what I can see.

But You call me to look beyond what my eyes can find. The things I cannot see are still real. Your Spirit is at work in the people I love. Your kingdom is moving even where I cannot watch it. You are using even this hard season to make something that will last forever.

Age has taught me this: the unseen is not just wishful thinking. It is solid and true. What I can see has changed. What You have promised has not.

Help me hold today's small troubles up against Your big, true story. Let me grieve what is gone, but never forget what can never be lost in You.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
